The Dark Path Deck (2023)
“Dedicated to people that are affected by addiction in their own lives.”
In 2023, I was tasked with creating a major work that was personal to me and my interests as a 3D designer. It was effectively a project where one would culminate all of their learnt skills and use them to craft a final design artefact.
My interest as a 3D designer and artist is story telling. This paired with my love for physical mediums such as print design along with my intrigue for lighting, texturing and scene composition in 3D design transferred to creating the card deck seen here, ‘The Dark Path’.
The deck tells a story of addiction and the decline that people often go through before hitting their “rock bottom”. When addiction becomes all consuming it often results in things like complete isolation, losing one’s sense of purpose, or dire health outcomes which can lead to losing one’s health or life all together.
Each scene gradually becomes more blurry to symbolise the loss of clarity an addict goes through during their decline, and the hopelessness and helplessness that clouds the perspective of themselves and those who surround them as the problem progresses.
Many people have faced the consequences of addiction in one way or another, either going through it themselves or observing their loved one’s struggle. The intention of this deck was to create something that an individual could reflect on those experiences with, as each card was crafted to be flexible and reordered freely to tell their own personal story.
*Each 3D scene was designed with the intention of getting the best colour and vibrancy for print. It took many lighting adjustments, colour corrections and edits to create prints that appropriately suited the intended purpose.
